About the Program
The Biology Major

In addition to the college-wide distribution and First-Year Seminar requirements, biology majors must complete a senior project of original scientific research and courses satisfying the core and elective components of the biology major.

Before moderation a student should have taken at least one one-hundred level biology course from the list below, Principles of Chemistry I & II and Eukaryotic Genetics, or their equivalent.

Core Courses

  1. At least one semester of a one hundred level biology course from the following list:
    Biology 141, Subcellular Biology
    Biology 142, Organismal Biology
    Biology 151, Genes to Traits
    Biology 152, Biodiversity
Biology 146, Earth and Life Through Time
Students typically take these courses during their first year. Students who come to Bard with advanced placement credit in biology are encouraged to take Biodiversity or Genes to Traits.
  2. Biology 201, Eukaryotic Genetics and Biology 202, Evolution
Most students take these courses during their second year.
  3. Biology 144, Biostatistics
Most students take this course in their second or third year.
  4. Principles of Chemistry I and II.
Students typically take these in their first year.
  5. Three Elective Courses.
A minimum of three additional courses in biology at the 200-level or greater. At least one of these courses must be a 400-level course and at least two must be laboratory courses. All 400-level courses require students to read and present the primary literature.
