About

The Bard College biology program offers courses and research opportunities on a wide variety of topics, including molecular biology, animal physiology, biodiversity, microbiology, sensory biology, climate change, metagenomics, and more. Students in the program receive outstanding preparation for all areas of graduate study in the biological sciences and health professions. Our curriculum prepares all students to be critical thinkers in the world of science, and gives them hands-on experience designing and conducting biological research.

Biology majors are encouraged to take full advantage of educational opportunities available outside of the sciences. The college has a number of programs that complement the biology major, including an intensive science-focused semester in New York City as part of the Bard-Rockefeller Semester in Science, secondary majors in “Global Public Health” and “Science, Technology, and Society”, as well as a co-terminal master’s degree program with the Bard Center for Environmental Policy.

Bard’s Biology Program has a long tradition of original research by its students. Each student’s educational experience at Bard culminates in a senior project, in which the student conducts an independent research project of his or her own design.

About 80% of our graduates are involved in science or math as graduate or professional students, health professionals, teachers, writers, or researchers. Bard students who apply to medical school have had a 78% placement rate (the national average is 50%). Their scores on the MCAT are equally impressive — average scores for Bard students are in the 96th percentile or above, and Bard is ranked as one of the top 25 schools in the country for the Verbal Reasoning part of the MCAT.
